From six to ten days after the eruption first makes its appearance, desquamation begins. The eruption fades, the skin becomes dry and constricted and is shed in the form of dry, bran-like scales. Sometimes it comes off in large flakes or even in ribbon-like strips a foot or more in length, and in rare cases, where the epidermis is thick, like on the hand or foot, a complete cast of the member is shed.

Bran-like? Desquamation? The very words I had been seeking for decades! At last I would be able describe precisely what had once happened to me. I bought the book on the spot.

Back then, when I was six, my branny desquamation, my one-boy snake show, had been replaced eventually – even mercifully – by the measles.

When it came to measles, the doctors and the old wives could agree upon only one thing: that the victim must be kept, like a turnip, in a darkened room.

This root-cellar similarity was quickly pointed out to me by my older sister, who stalked up and down my sickroom chanting solemnly:
